Shelley’s achievements..
Regardless of being tagged with ‘no natural ability, disabled and nothing above average’ 7-time World No. 1 Women’s Marathon Swimming champion Shelley is the only woman to achieve No. 1 world ranking for both men and women in the history of any sport worldwide.
Nicknamed ‘Dangerous when Wet’ by her competitors (and apt title of her biography) Shelley’s greatest personal achievement is not a title or an award. It is the result of her achieving the No. 1 world ranking that led to the international swimming governing body, FINA creating equal prize money and separate rankings for both genders, that is, her global legacy for women.
Shelley gives back as Ambassador, Board member for the Swan River Trust and Burswood Park whilst also serving as advisory consultant for Swimming Australia Limited and Swimming WA. Her lastest project ‘The Feminine Code’ helps women achieve their desired feminine potential, power and performance.
Shelley Taylor-Smith has rewritten the record books and set new standards in one of the roughest sports imaginable – marathon swimming. Seven consecutive world titles, a world championship gold medal and head to head victories over the best men in the sport have marked her as one one the supreme athletes of the 1980’s & 1990’s. On her triumphant march through a career spanning twelve years, she has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest swim (male or female) around New York’s Manhatton Island and captivated Australia with her record shattering swim from Sydney to Woollongong..and she hasn’t finished yet!
Shelley has shared her story in a book ‘Dangerous When Wet’ from her memories growing up in Perth to her drama filled reclamation of the ‘round Manhattan’ record. The book is spirited, uncompromising and right from the heart, like Shelley! Behind her rise to success, life dealt Shelley some heavy blows which are captivated in a riveting story of an amazing woman’s life. Above all, ‘Dangerous When Wet’ is about belief in oneself, triumph over adversity and the power of positive thinking!
