Another Bloody Breakfast - 11th April 2019What is a Blood Clot? Are you at risk?
Blood clots are jelly-like masses of blood. They can occur in arteries or veins, in your heart, brain, lungs, abdomen, arms, and legs. You need your blood to clot when you’re cut or injured. It helps stop bleeding. Most of the time, your body breaks down the clot, after your wound has healed. But sometimes, they don’t dissolve on their own, clots form inside your blood vessels for no reason. When this happens, it can lead to serious health problems or a medical emergency! Date: Thursday, 11th April 2019 Time: 7:30am to 9:00am Place: University Club of Western Australia (Hackett Entrance No.1, Hackett Drive, Crawley) Tickets: $45 each (Limited Seats) For more info, contact Adriana Filippou: adriana@pbi.org.au |
Another Bloody Breakfast - 18th October 2018
World Thrombosis Day is October 13 - 1 in 4 people die from causes related to thrombosis. It’s a leading cause of global death and disability. Thrombosis is the formation of potentially deadly blood clots in the artery or vein. Thrombosis was the topic at ‘Another Bloody Breakfast’ hosted by 6PR’s Tony McManus on Thursday 18th October at University Club of WA.
Tony briefed the audience the two main symptoms of thrombosis are pain and swelling. The pain in the affected area (usually the leg) begins like a cramp and may intensify. Swelling occurs in the vicinity of the blood clot and in rare cases, there may be no symptoms at all! Most blood clots can be prevented, if the risk factors are assessed appropriately. Fact: Researchers have discovered the link between women who take the pill and blood clots. While blood clots can affect anyone, they were the second leading cause of death in pregnant women and can cause fertility problems and miscarriage.
Special guest Alicia Martin had the audience in awe, when telling her story of living with thrombosis and DVT for over 10 years. Amongst the audience was Chrissy Morrissey who also had a personal connection.

Another Bloody Breakfast - 3rd May 2018
‘Why do People Bleed’ was the focus at ‘Another Bloody Breakfast’ held Thursday 3rd May at University Club of WA. Hosted by the ever professional Adrian Barich, Barra even learnt something, that when you cut yourself, substances in the blood called clotting factors, combine with blood cells called platelets, to make the blood sticky. This stops the bleeding, but for people who have a bleeding disorder, the clotting process doesn’t work properly and they bleed longer than normal.
Special guest Reece Whitby MLA spoke about a personal story of his own, and took the time to speak with guests, about the work he’s involved with in the Community.
Guests were inspired by John, living with Haemophilia A, who was told he would not reach the age of 15! John is fighting fit, thanks to the most up to date treatments he has received through Perth Blood Institute’sClinical Trials.

Scholarship Recipients 2017
Munik Tan - recipient of the Jan Roberts Biomedical Research Scholarship. Munik’s important research will increase our understanding of why women develop thrombosis on the contraceptive pill and pregnancy. Munik has been asked to present preliminary data from her PhD at the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Conference in Berlin in July 2017. Her abstract was selected for an oral presentation, which are only offered for abstracts deemed to have a high impact.
Matthew Halliday - Honours Scholarship recipient, researching the impact of new oral anticoagulants in the diagnosis and management of deep vein thrombosis. Matthew’s Honours project aims to determine optimal new generation of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (or DOACs) dose for different patient groups, including obese patients (BMI >30). The results from Matt’s study will help better inform the clinical management of patients prescribed DOACs, increasing the effectiveness of these new treatments.

Prof. Baker with the Perth Blood Institute Scientists and Clinical Trials team were well represented at the HAA 2016 Conference at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, November 13-16, 2016.
HAA is a joint scientific meeting of clinical haematologists scientists, specialist laboratory scientists and researchers working in the fields of thrombosis and haemophilia.
Congratulations to this year’s winner of the THANZ Scientific Medal, our very own Dr Jasmine Tay who presented an abstract on microRNAs and oestrogen-associated thrombotic risk in pregnancy. Further congratulations to runner up Dr Jim Tiao (also from WACTH and PBI) for his abstract presentation on the APMAT1 study, which was one of the top scoring abstracts.
Dr Quintin Hughes chaired the ASTH workshop and presenting cutting edge results on Thrombin-targeting Aptamers. What are Aptamers you ask? They are single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules that can bind to pre-selected targets with high affinity and specificity. Aptamers are used as sensors and therapeutic tools to regulate cellular processes, as well as guide drugs to their specific cellular targets.

Did you know.. bleeding disorders, particularly in girls and women, are often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed due to lack of awareness! An undiagnosed bleeding disorder can put girls and women at HIGH risk! von Willebrand is a common bleeding disorder found in women but many go undiagnosed. Prof. Baker and his team’s research into the treatment of von Willebrand disease focuses on stopping or preventing bleeding episodes. The Perth Blood Institute’s purpose is to address the critical issues faced by women with bleeding disorders and with the right treatment, most women with von Willebrand disease can lead a relatively normal and healthy life.
