Volunteer Guidelines

Any individual or group volunteering on behalf of The Perth Blood Institute Limited must agree to and accept the following terms and conditions.  Volunteers must register and be authorised to volunteer by The Perth Blood Institute Limited.

Principles of Volunteering

Volunteering is an activity which takes place for the benefit of the community, for no financial gain and of the volunteer’s own free will.

Volunteering Australia’s principles of volunteering:-
  1. Volunteering benefits the community and the volunteer
  2. Volunteer work is unpaid
  3. Volunteering is always a matter of choice
  4. Volunteering is not compulsorily undertaken to receive government allowances
  5. Volunteering is an activity performed in the not for profit sector
  6. Volunteering is not a substitute for paid work
  7. Volunteers do not replace paid workers nor constitute a threat to the job security of paid workers
  8. Volunteering is a vehicle for individuals or groups to address human, environmental and social needs
  9. Volunteering is a legitimate way which individuals can participate in the activities of their community
  10. Volunteering respects the rights, dignity and culture of others, and
  11. Volunteering promotes human rights and equality

Your rights as a volunteer

Unlike paid staff, volunteers are not covered by awards or workplace agreements.  Volunteers do have rights, some of which are protected under legislation and some which are considered the moral obligations of an organisation involving volunteers.

As a volunteer, The Perth Blood Institute Limited will:-
  1. Provide a healthy, safe workplace and cover volunteers with relevant insurance
  2. Have policies and procedures which conform to State and Federal Laws
  3. Conduct effective recruiting and screening of volunteers
  4. Train and support our team of volunteers
  5. Protect private, sensitive and confidential information
  6. Respond to your feedback

The Perth Blood Institute Limited is committed to the safety of its team and wherever possible, ensures that all volunteers are safe from injury and personal risk whist volunteering on their behalf.

Volunteer Screening Procedure

In order to protect all parties (including Perth Blood Institute Limited) all potential volunteers will be screened before commencing their volunteering duties.  This will include face to face interview, identification and reference checks including Police Clearance.  This allows us to ensure reliable and trustworthy members of the community will be given the opportunity to become official Perth Blood Institute volunteers.

Upon Police Clearance checks, only those with no criminal history will be permitted to become volunteers. As part of the recruitment process, volunteers will be given information, orientation, training, support, health and safety considerations and recognition as would be expected from an organisation which highly values and respects volunteer commitment.

  • Are you in general good health
  • What is your availability and what other commitments do you have

  • What skills and experience do you have to offer

  1. Corporate Breakfasts
  2. Sausage Sizzles
  3. General office duties

Volunteer Code of Conduct
  1. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age
  2. Volunteers must be representations of The Perth Blood Institute philosophy
  3. Present a positive image and have an open and honest approach
  4. Have a neat appearance
  5. Wear the official t-shirt and lanyard
  6. Be on time
  7. Treat other volunteers, guests and general public with respect
  8. Follow directions and welcome feedback
  9. Try to avoid using mobile phone whilst volunteering your services
  10. Inform staff immediately if an emergency occurs

Volunteers must NOT
  1. Drink or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs during whilst volunteering at an event
  2. Smoke while volunteering
  3. Act in any way to damage The Perth Blood Institute Limited brand
  4. Enter into any conversations/deals regarding marketing or sponsorship
  5. Make any statement to the Media on behalf of The Perth Blood Institute Limited
  6. Leave an event without advising Adriana Filippou (unless in an emergency)
